Two-player chess on one iPhone, face to face.
ScrollChess lets two people play chess on one iPhone. Lay the phone flat on the table between you: the board stays put, and the pieces turn to face whoever is to move. No second phone, no account, no network.

Three ways to sit
Across the table
The phone lies flat between two players facing each other. The pieces rotate 180° to face whoever moves, and each side has its own status line and take-back button.
Side by side
Hand the phone over after each move. The board turns around, so whoever is to play is always looking at their own side.
Board stays still
Nothing turns. For players who would rather read the board from one side.
Landscape, or a folding phone
Turn any iPhone sideways for the board and the moves side by side. On an iPhone Duo the board can lie flat while the moves stand behind it.
Questions
Can two people play chess on one iPhone sitting opposite each other?
Yes. In ScrollChess's Across the table mode the phone lies flat between you. The board stays where it is and the pieces turn 180° to face whoever is to move, and each player has their own status line and take-back button on their side of the screen.
Does it need an internet connection or an account?
No. Both players are on the same phone, and the app has no server to talk to. It works the same in aeroplane mode.
Can we play on two separate phones?
Not yet. Two players share one iPhone; there is no online play and no play across two devices.
Does it work in landscape?
Yes, from version 1.1, on every iPhone. Turn the phone sideways and the board and the move list sit side by side.
What does it cost?
$6.99 once, or €7.99 in the euro area, with no subscription, no ads and no in-app purchases. The same purchase includes the Apple Watch app.
Alone? The same app plays an engine at 4 levels, and on Apple Watch you play it with the crown. · What's new
